The idea of attending a group and sharing personal information with others can initially be overwhelming, but group, where 5 to 10 individuals come together with one or two therapists can be very beneficial. Over the years I have worked with many individuals in a group setting and found that the experience is very rewarding for all involved!
Here are some of the benefits of group therapy:
Groups provide support. Hearing from others with similar issues helps you see that you’re not alone in having challenges, whether you're grappling with panic attacks, depression, or another mental health issue. People experience a sense of relief when they realize they are not alone.
Groups provide a sounding board. Hearing from others about how you come across during a conflict, or sharing strategies for coping can provide a wider perspective on your situation and can help you deal with your problems better.
Groups can propel you forward. Hearing that others have found success or have managed to move forward through difficulties can be inspiring and give a sense of hope.
Groups promote social skills. Groups can ease isolation and by participating in a group, you see that you can get along with others.
Group therapy costs less than individual counseling. Group is usually half the cost of individual therapy and is a very powerful tool for recovery.
Groups teach you about yourself. By hearing the perspective of others, it’s a way of uncovering the blind spots that may be blocking your ability to overcome your issues.
